Culture Sculpture: Little Brother 'May the Lord Watch' One Year Anniversary

New content additions to The MPN Network. This will be a column where we share some of our favorite things going on in the culture. It will also serve as a highlight of people, places, things, and ideas that are needed to flourish the culture we exist in. Branding updates as time progresses. Enjoy though.

Curation by Mr. Al Pete

I was reminded yesterday (August 20th, 2020) that Little Brother released their surprise album ‘May the Lord Watch’ a year ago. In this new life we’re in, time is scrambled. We wake up on Tuesday…thinking it’s Friday. Whole seasons have passed, one month seems like…a season, and a day seems like a week. It’s crazy, as you know. With that, the order of congratulations were almost missed. Thank goodness Phonte posted on his Twitter feed that they would be doing an Instagram live that would be celebrating their year old classic.

Classic, in my terms = a body of music that’ll be in my rotation for years. Plus, being a major fan of The Little Brother Movement adds to that.

Here are 5 points that I received by watching their live. You can watch on Little Brother’s Instagram

  1. J. Cole almost made the album. Man! LB has done records with Lil Wayne, Drake, Bun B, and others, so a Cole verse would have been tough, and not shocking to do (Pooh plays management with Lute, a Dreamville artist and has worked with Jamla camp…specifically with 9th Wonder and Rapsody). It didn’t happen, due to Pooh and Tay’s decision to have no features on the album. Respected.

  2. Focus is a damn beast on the beats! All respects to Khrysis, Black Milk, and Nottz…but Focus??? Listen. The flips he did on his respected tracks…STUPID!

  3. Joe Scudda owns a bar in Atlanta, Georgia. I listened to the clip numerous times and apparently, it’s called Big Sky Buckhead Restaurant and Bar. I’m hoping it’s correct. Nevertheless, that’s dope! I need to find it next time I’m in Atlanta. Here’s the Instagram. Looks dope.

  4. Devin Morrison produced ‘A Word From the President’ skit…AND…it’s a whole song. *does my Googles*

  5. ‘Goodmorning Sunshine’ IS on the top 5 list of the best Little Brother songs. Pooh’s verses on this song is part of the reason why it’s on my list, but both of them handled business on this jam.

  6. (Bonus) Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh’s relationship is admirable. Black man moves. I rarely see brotherly love, so when I see it, I honor it. We need more…but guys have to get out of that macho man bull.

…brotherhood.

…brotherhood.

So yeah…this was a great watch. I appreciate when (my favorite) artists break down the process, thoughts, and production of the songs. I’m a music history nerd, y’all. I also appreciate how this shapes the way content can be presented. It’s called engagement. I’m learning from it, and I love it.

They’ll be more content I’ll be sharing that I feel are tools to keeping our type of work fresh and living. Evergreen flow. If you would like to see a subject highlighted that could be useful, feel free to hit me up.

P.S. Check out Little Brother’s album below. THEE FUNK!
